THE CARNIVAL CARAVAN IS IN MOTION 01-06-2005
With less than one week to go before the Grenada Carnival Committee’s launch of the 2005 Carnival season, things are certainly heating up around the island.
ST. JOHN’S
On Friday May 27th the St. John’s Social and Cultural Organization followed up its launch of Carnival two weeks with a massive street jump-up. The first jump-up of the season was eagerly awaited and the huge turnout was testimony to that anticipation. A plethora of local soca music was provided by DJ Danny D maintaining the true spirit of Carnival among the enthusiastic lovers and supporters of Spicemas. Plans for Carnival in St. John’s are moving ahead at full speed. A full schedule of the activities in St. John’s is posted on this site under the heading Parish events.
ST. PATRICK’S
The St. Patrick’s Carnival Committee launched its 2005 Carnival season on Saturday May 28th at the Sauteurs Bus Terminal. The event was well attended and it was most encouraging to see the proliferation of traditional bands. The St. Patrick’s Carnival Committee is definitely making a concerted effort to spearhead a resurgence of some of Grenada’s indigenous mas. It was a very pleasing site to see the Black Beat Dancers putting on a spirited exhibition of Maypole dancing. Also on display at the launch were Apache dancers from La Mode/Marli, African Dancers from the Lyva Salle Organization for Development and a very energetic and vocal band of Shortknees. Additionally there were performances by veteran Calypsonian Scientist, Young Sound, Boogie B, Papa Jerry and the sons of Former Calypso Monarch, Lady Cynthy, Kellon and Kelson Ogiste.
If the Launch of Carnival in St. Patrick’s is an indication of things to come then the northernmost Parish will be a must stop as one endeavours to take in all Spicemas has to offer.
LA BORIE
Former Calypso Monarch, Smokey and Former Road March winner, Japs teamed up to bring some Spicemas action to the people of La Borie, St. George’s. The venue was the indoor facility of the La orie hard-court. A host of local entertainers brought some major energy to La Borie. Among them were Zingo, Black Wizard, Steffie, Sheldon Douglas, Japs and Smokey. The event was free to the public and it was a welcome site to see the Artistes working together to invoke the spirit of Spicemas.
