On Sunday May 28th it was the turn of the Parish of St. John
to launch its Carnival Season. Minister of Tourism and Culture Hon.
Brenda Hood addressed the gathering at the Pool Wall and reiterated the
importance of Carnival and its importance to the overall development of Grenadians. Minister Hood went on to highlight the role Carnival and
culture will play in the upcoming 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Senator Einstein Louison declared the 2006 Carnival season in St. John
open, with a band of Vecours parading down Central Depradine Street,
punctuating the announcement. One of the highlights of the launch and
certainly of Carnival in St. John in 2006 is the presence of two steel
bands. The AT&T Florida Allstars have been adequately representing the
Parish over the last three years or so and now a new steel band, the
Grand Roy Pan Angels has been formed. Both bands thrilled the crowd
throughout the evening with their energetic and entertaining renditions.
Presentations were made by Tanti Merle, Hinds & Associates, Spice Isle
Dancers, Waterloo Shortknee, Legends, Sacred Angels, Kebo’s Band, Men
from the Boneyard and Condemners from Hell creating a major buzz about
what St. John will be offering in 2006.
The six delegates for the 2006 St. John Carnival Queen show were
also introduced. A plethora of Soca and Calypso Artistes capped off an
evening of great entertainment. Carnival in St. John looks very
promising; in fact that Parish has led the charge as it relates to
community-based Carnivals and a great time will be had by all those
making they way to St. John for Carnival 2006.
Two more launches take place this weekend.
On Saturday June 03rd the Grenada Mas Band Association will launch its
2006 Carnival season with presentations both by way of sketches and
prototypes. The launch takes place at the NIS Car Park on Melville
Street and starts at 4pm. Additional entertainment will be provided by a
host of local Calysonians and Soca Artistes.
The St. Andrew Carnival Committee launches the season in the Big Parish
the following day, Sunday June 04th. The action kicks off at 4pm.
Also the Mt. Mortiz community launches its mas band on Sunday June 04th
at the Mt. Mortiz Playing Field. The action there kicks off at 4:30pm.
Things are certainly heating up as the 2006 Carnival season unfolds.
The Grenada Carnival Committee encourages all to be safe, do all things
in moderation and support local Culture and music by purchasing only
authentic copies of the Artistes’ music.
