CARNIVAL LAUNCH IN ST. PATRICKS - May 31st, 2006

By Dexter Mitchell

The magical carnival season of 2006 continued last weekend with the launch of Carnival by two Parish Committees.

On Saturday May 27th the St. Patrick Carnival Committee launched its Carnival season with a fantastic evening of premier, quality Grenadian Culture. Parliamentary Representatives, Hon. Anthony Boatswain, the Minister of Finance and Hon. Tillman Thomas took the opportunity to highlight the significance of Carnival not only as an economic factor but also as being very instrumental in the development of our people. The Chairperson of the Grenada Carnival Committee, Dr. Trevor Friday, was charged with the responsibility of declaring the 2006 Carnival season in St. Patrick’s open. That task was done to great fanfare with Inspector’s latest ode to Sauteurs providing the appropriate accompaniment.

The rest of the evening was dedicated to the practitioners of all things Carnival. The Marli Shortknee, Lazarus Antoine & Associates, Mt. Rodney Shortknee, Revival & Associates, Hermitage Shortknee, The Real Pirates and the Black Beat Dancers all represented what St. Patrick will be offering for Carnival 2006. The six contestants for the Miss St. Patrick Carnival Queen Show were also introduced and with the tremendous response from the crowd one can expect a well-attended and keen contest.

The evening was closed off with performances from Calypsonians and Soca Artistes, most of who were from the St. Patrick area. Former Junior Calypsonian, Zina was most impressive with her take on the Passa Passa issue. Travis, Bico, the Black Squad Crew, Elements and Electrify and Luni Sparks all gave very good accounts of themselves.

The launch of Carnival is always an indication of things to come and as the St. Patrick theme says: “Meet me in Sauteurs”, Tuesday morning for j’ouvert or anytime leading up to Carnival Monday and Tuesday. See the pics of the launch in the photo gallery
